More than a dozen vehicles were temporarily trapped by snowfall on Central Otago's Crown Range road with police warning motorists to take care during winter weather.

Two campervans and a further 10 to 15 vehicles were stuck on Cardrona Valley Rd, between Wanaka and Queenstown, according to reports to police on Saturday night. Police officers in 4WDs responded.

It was not clear whether they needed rescuing but the road was open this morning, according to the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

"There was a decent amount of snowfall last night on the Crown Range and probably took many people by surprise how quickly the conditions can change," it said in a Facebook post.

Snow and ice were still a problem on Sunday morning and motorists should carry chains, the council said.

State Highway 94 around the Homer Tunnel was closed by snow on Sunday morning.

Police on Saturday night warned motorists to take care in parts of the South Island.

Trees came down overnight on State Highway 6 at Haast and Harihari. The road was open on Sunday morning.
