Hunua MP Andrew Bayly couldn't be further from the comfort of the Beehive.

He's made it all the way to the North Pole, on skis, to raise funds to prevent Kokako becoming extinct in the Hunua Ranges.

Speaking from one of the most far flung places on earth, Mr Bayly told our newsroom his view was somewhat impressive.

He described it as "a wonderful typical Arctic landscape, flat with big blocks of ice as you look around. It's a bit like a lunar landscape, but of course all in white."

Andrew Bayly said it's been a challenge all about teamwork, with temperatures of minus 30 one of the biggest challenges, along with navigating pressure ridges.

Bayly said having his 20-year-old son James as part of the team has been wonderful and he is very proud.

"The sledges we were pulling are pretty heavy, and at times trying to pull those over 3-5 feet blocks of ice, you've literally just got to handle them."

"He's dragged his big heavy sledge all the way like all of us, so he's done a great job."

Getting home is the next challenge, with the adventurers at last contact awaiting a Russian chopper to take them the edge of the ice, before travelling to an island in the Northwest Passage and over to Norway and onwards south.

They should be back in New Zealand sometime around the end of the month.
