Mobile traders slammed by Commerce Commission

The Direct Sellers Association says it's had to complain about mobile truck shops before themselves, because they don't operate ethically.

A Commerce Commission report has found mobile traders nation wide are targeting lower socio-economic groups.

The report into 32 mobile traders found just one was compliant within current laws, and it's the only one with a DSA membership.

Two truck shops are now under investigation.

The report states these truck shops make unrealistic claims about products, which end up costing people who can't afford them far more money than they're worth, and are often of lower quality.

The Direct Selling Association's Garth Wyllie has argued that if the trader they represent can operate an ethical pricing model, then others should be able to as well.

"We don't believe that there's a reason to gouge pricing - doubling, tripling or quadrupling the pricing of a commodity type product."

Mr Wyllie said he'd love the other 31 to clean up their act and join the association "but the reality is that they don't comply currently with our code of practice, and that's essentially the bench mark on what we see as the minimum ethical standard that our trucks should be operating under."
