A methamphetamine expert says the Head Hunters gang is heavily involved in making and selling methamphetamine - and demand for the drug is as high as ever.
Massive Police raids yesterday saw 10 people charged over the production and supply of the drug known as P.
Methcon boss Dale Kirk explains the methamphetamine industry works like a pyramid, with gangs like the Head Hunters operating at the upper middle end.
"I think it's really important for the public to understand that despite protestations from gangs that they're not involved and are trying to clean up, it really is propaganda."
"They're pulling the wool over our eyes."
Mr Kirk said a three-pronged approach is needed to break methamphetamine's hold on New Zealand.
He thinks young people need to be educated to stop them trying the drug, Police and Customs need to keep a firm grip on the supply side, and we need to better care for addicts.
"We certainly don't have enough in terms of treatment facilities for addicts in this country, and until we do that we'll continue to have demand for the drug, which of course allows supply. If there's no demand for the drug supply will dry up."
