Canterbury's aquifers are now the lowest they've been since the 1980's.
Environment Canterbury have today released their drought update early, as the region enters its third season of drought.
ECAN said more than 86 percent of the wells they've monitored show a low or very low groundwater level.
They said the lack of rainfall will likely result in low or no flows in Canterbury's rivers or streams.
And North Canterbury once again looks to be the worst affected area.
ECAN CEO Bill Bayfield said even wet weather and snow forecast for the next couple of days won't be enough to change things, as there needs to be long and sustained rainfall.
Mr Bayfield said South and North Canterbury in particular are at real risk of having their underwater bores being unable to access groundwater.
