Brothel open day will help kids, says organiser

UPDATED 6.12PM: The organiser of a South Taranaki brothel open day says it will do more to help kids than it will do to harm families.

The adult-only open day at 'Shh...Adult Fun Spot' will raise funds for Kai Kitchen, a Hawera charity that provides lunches for school children.

During the day next month, three staff members at the brothel will take onsite tours and answer questions about their jobs.

Family First director Bob McCoskrie is branding the fundraiser as tacky, and a cynical attempt to promote the business and normalise prostitution.

But brothel owner Nicky Hughes said the event will raise much needed funds for a Hawera children's charity.

"We've got hungry kids in our community. I'm on the committee board and I can say first hand how many hungry kids we've got. If we can help some of them, we will."

Hughes wants the day to change public perception around the industry, and said it should be considered normal.

She said her staff and her clients are sick of getting a bad wrap for operating in an industry that's been legal since 2003.

"Granted, it could generate business but that's not our goal for this event," she said.

"This event is purely to discuss what we do, why we do it, and why there is really a need for it in the market."
