A third case of measles has been confirmed in Nelson, and the infected person is in Nelson Hospital, where five other people are in isolation.

The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board said the new case was unrelated to the first, which indicated measles is in the community.

Medical officer of health Dr Andrew Lindsay said the best thing for people to do was to ensure they and their children are up to date with the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine.

He said measles is highly infectious to non-immune people and started with fever and usually a cough or runny nose, and perhaps sore, red eyes before the rash appeared.
