An appeal is being made for sightings of a yellow Mazda Demio hatchback in the area where Auckland mother-of-two Joanne Pert was found murdered.

Police asked anyone who saw the vehicle anywhere between Wednesday and midday Thursday last week to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Kevin Hooper said the man who handed himself into police at Auckland Central Station was driving the yellow hatchback.

Police say the public response so far has been heartening, with dozens of calls and messages.

Among these was a confirmed sighting of Joanne Pert at 9 o'clock on Thursday morning in the Viaduct area.

Mr Hooper says it seems she would have run from there to Remuera.

He said they're getting a good response to their plea for help as they piece together the movements of Ms Pert.

She was attacked and killed while out jogging in Remuera this week.

A 24-year-old man has been charged with her murder, but a squad is still working full-time on the case.

Detective Inspector Kevin Hooper said the investigation is in its early stages, but one sighting places Jo Pert at 9am, on the morning she was killed.

"That sighting was in the Viaduct area at Auckland City, she was in her exercise gear and was seen jogging. I'm pretty happy that that sighting is credible."

Mr Hooper said he especially wants to hear from other women who were out jogging in Remuera or Auckland City, on Thursday morning.

"I'm very pleased with the response we've had to date to the 0800 number, we've had a lot of calls but clearly we're still sifting through the information and I think there are about three or four pages of notes."

Mr Hooper said he believes the man wasn't known to the victim, and that it was a random attack.
