Mayoralty would mean stepping down, says Key

The Prime Minister says Maurice Williamson would have to step down as a minister if he seeks the Auckland Mayoralty.

Mr Williamson's been lobbied to contest the mayoral race but is still to decide if he'll give it a crack

John Key says Mr Williamson says Mr Williamson would have to resign his portfolios if he chooses to stand for Mayor.

"They'd effectively have to resign as a minister because if you stand down as a minister you'd be paid.

"Because we have no way of stopping that, and that wouldn't be acceptable of course."

John Key says while it's possible for MPs to serve on councils, it wouldn't be practical for Mr Williamson to remain an MP if he became Mayor of Auckland.
