Labour scoffs at Destiny Church plans

By: Katie Bradford-Crozier | Latest Political News | Thursday January 12 2012 7:06

Plans by the Destiny Church to create a mega centre in south Auckland, including a university and schools, are being scoffed at by Labour.

Deputy leader Grant Robertson says legislation is required for a university to be created, and so the Brian Tamaki-led church would have to bend regulations to gain the title.

He says the only option is to create a private training establishment that offers overseas university qualifications, and that could leave people vulnerable.

"That's something that needs to be looked at quite carefully. They may create some arrangement with perhaps a bible college or something in the US and you have the risk there of people thinking they're enrolling for a course when we don't know very much about the quality of it," he says.
