We're not an al-Qaeda target, says expert

New Zealand News | Friday August 2 2013 11:21

We are being told not to be alarmed by John Key's claim Kiwis have been trained by al-Qaeda in places such as Yemen.

The Prime Minister is using it to justify the need for changes to the country's spy laws.

Royal United Services Institute senior research fellow Raffaello Pantucci told Mike Hosking that a New Zealander has never shown up in any threat messaging from al-Qaeda.

"New Zealand's remoteness, and the probably very small number of people that we're talking about, would suggest that it seems unlikely that New Zealand, even in terms of targeting foreigners based there, would be a target."
