PHOTOS: Foods that flopped

New and exciting food products are constantly being dreamt up and filling our shelves (and our stomachs) in a bid to empty our wallets - like the new Whittakers Jelly Tip chocolate and the Lewis Road Creamery chocolate milk. We take a look at some of the products that have been introduced and haven't taken off over the years...What were they thinking?

Colgate frozen meals: In 1982 Colgate released a range of 'Colgate Kitchen Entrees' which were frozen meals that were supposed to be an easy and healthy dinner option. Unfortunately, most people only associated Colgate with minty white tooth pastes and the dinners did not take off. Alongside this, it is believed that when this product was at the peak of its unpopularity, sales for Colagte's toothpastes dropped also. A flop all around

The McAfrika: Perhaps one of the biggest food fails in history, the Mc Afrika was a McDonald's burger with pita breads in place of the buns. The release of the African styled burger sparked outrage as it was launched at a time when  12 million people were starving in southern Africa.

Callipo Shots: these little pea-sized balls of flavoured ice were a hit when they were first released, but they soon became a 'one hit wonder' food as people grew tired of the ice balls freezing together meaning they couldn't be shaken from their cup

Bluebird paua fritter flavoured chips: in 2010 Bluebird launched a campaign called "Do Us a Flavour" where kiwis were asked to invent and then vote on their dream chip flavour. Unfortunately, although kiwis like paua and they also like chips, they didn't like the combination of both and these chips didn't continue to be produced.

Coca Cola BlaK: in 2006 Coca Cola introduced Coca Cola BlaK to the market. Coca Cola BlaK was a coffee flavoured Coca Cola that was designed as an energy drink to help people stay focused and awake for long periods of concentration. Sprite Remix: introduced in 2003, this colourless liquid fizzy drink appeared like Sprite but was flavoured with fruit flavourings e.g. berry and orange. This lack of colour but change of flavour confused consumers and meant that the product flopped and was discontinued.

Heinz E-Z Squirt tomato sauce: in 2000 Heinz released these coloured tomato sauces  (purple, green and blue) to be a fun twist on a classic sauce. Despite being popular for children for a few years, the novelty soon wore off and the sauce was discontinued in 2006.

The McPizza: in the 1990s, while trying to stay ahead of their game, McDonald's introduced a pizza to their menu in the hope that people would forget about places like Dominoes and Pizza Hut. Unfortunately, customers didn't catch on and felt they could find better pizza elsewhere. The McPizza was discontinued but it is believed that the McPizza can still be purchased in two McDonald's stores in the US.
