The prospect of a Clinton/Bush battle for the White House next year says a lot about the state of politics in the United States, the main one is that they've run out of ideas, or more correctly, credible candidates.

The best thing that can be said for Hillary Clinton is that her hubby Bill brought God's Own in from the cold after we'd got on the wrong side of Ronnie Reagan for banning his boats from our ports. Bedroom Bill issued the first invitation for yonks for a Prime Ministerial visit to the White House which saw Jim Bolger sprinting along Pennsylvania Avenue.

And if you look at the other family with designs on the First Family Home, it goes from bad to worse. George Bush senior was bad enough, his son George Double Ya was worse but even the prospect of Jeb making up the terrible troika should be enough to relegate the Presidential election to the political dustbin.

But what's the alternative? Well, the Americans are innovative if nothing else, even entertaining the prospect of Donald Trump taking out the contest.

The Republicans were left scrambling after Mitt Romney crashed and burned to Obama in 2012, largely because he couldn't collar the powerful Latino vote. Apparently he turned them off by the mere suggestion they'd return from whence they came if they were denied work and welfare in the United States.

Enter Trump to the debate who's as subtle as a runaway bull in a china shop. He accused the Mexican Government of sending its criminals and rapists across the border and said if he was in the big house he'd build a massive border wall, more than two thousand kilometres long, after deporting every Latino in the country illegally. And he'd make the Mexicans pay for it.

If that wasn't bad enough he gave us his wisdom on war heros, saying the former Republican contender for the job John McCain wasn't one of them. Why? Because he was captured.

The fact that McCain spent five and a half years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and refused to leave when given the chance ahead of his fellow prisoners, seemed to have escaped him.

Of course there have been the gaffs about women and how the Fox News anchor had blood coming out of her eyes, and coming out of whatever, hardly endeared him to women voters.

Still he's leading the ticket by a country mile which surely says something about the American psyche!
