Retired All Black Keven Mealamu is wishing Richie McCaw and his fiancee Gemma Flynn well.

The pair publicly revealed their engagement last night.

Mealamu told Tim Wilson on NewstalkZB that McCaw was a good mate and he was really happy for him.

He said McCaw's put a lot of work into the rugby part of his life and now he gets the opportunity to sit back, relax and be able to share time with someone.

His advice to the couple was: "You only get to do it once, so make sure you do it well."

He said it was good that, after putting so much of his life into rugby, Richie could now sit back, relax and share time with someone.

He wouldn't comment on whether Richie's the romantic sort - that question was best left to Gemma.
