A witness of a Saturday football game says he watched a player with a broken leg wait nearly 40 minutes for an ambulance before he was taken to hospital in a courier van instead. 

Former All White David Chote was at the game. 

He said player Jorge Akers was badly injured and "in real pain" as he waited after 111 was called. 

An ambulance never arrived, Chote says.

"In the end, it was a club member who grabbed his courier van, they got that onto the park, put him in the back and got him off to hospital" 

Chote says there was confusion and concern at the park over the delay.
