Martin Devlin: Crusaders are a national rugby treasure

Four big things we learned from the weekend’s sport.

The Crusaders are a national rugby treasure. What would SRA be without this champion franchise? Power, pace, at times breath-taking skill and a ruthless streak that can only be admired - even when they’re belting you own favourite side. Tony Johnson said it perfectly on Friday night with “they make the brilliant look easy”. Bring on the Blues, the only NZ side capable of testing them. And note I didn’t say “beat”, I said “test”.

Paul Williams is, for now, the world’s worst TMO. Poor bloke had an absolute shocker over the weekend bungling several calls that will mean a very uncomfortable visit to the refereeing Headmaster’s office today.

If the job wasn’t hard enough anyway, the fact that your decisions are so public and so scrutinised means it’s a real test of character for the man to absorb his own errors and regain confidence in his own eyeballs before next weekend’s round. Good luck mate and avoid all social media for a month of you know what’s good for you.

The Warriors win over the Titans means for one more week at least the country’s most loyal faithful fan base can still genuinely cling to the mantra that “it IS our year”.

And there’s something about being out on the water that clearly brings out the brazen in people’s behaviour. The amount of wilful nudity ND flashing by seemingly normally sensible adults on Am Cup spectator boats is literally eye-opening.

And before all those toady tell-off millennials on social media get even more outraged about something that (again) is none of their business, these are adults happily doing silly things because they’re having fun.

Remember what that word meant you miserable bunch of moaners? So go and tell someone else how this is just another example of the boomer generation’s patriarchal exploitation. And wake me up when you begin to grow up.
