Canadian doctor who's helped 150 people end their lives talks euthanasia reform

An international euthanasia expert believes people with no quality of life should have the right to choose if they want to die.

The End of Life Choice Bill passed its second reading in Parliament this week by 70 votes to 50, but faces a number of hurdles before it can make it to law, with some opponents threatening to flood the next process with amendments.

A similar bill was passed in Canada in 2016, so far around 8,000 people have had medically assisted deaths.

Canadian Dr Stefanie Green has assisted 150 patients and told Francesca Rudkin people want assisted deaths because they're unable to do any activities that bring standard to their life.

"They've lost their ability to do what they used to do, and they've lost any sort of autonomy, and that for them is intolerable."

She says that has met some brave and incredible people through her role, who are grateful for the service she is providing.

Dr Green says that around two-thirds of people who seek euthanasia in Canada go through with it, though that one-third is made of some who die before they can finish the process.

She describes the process as "very, very peaceful", and people tend to be surrounded by friends and family at the time who are usually very supportive.

She says that it has taken a few years but the legalisation of euthanasia has had an impact on Canada.

"There is enormous public support for this kind of care. We see 85 per cent of Canadians really in support for this end of life choice, and only for those who qualify."

Dr Green says that it takes the fear and unknown out of the equation for people who are already aware they are going to die.
