Last night was the world premiere of a movie celebrating one of New Zealand’s most iconic bands, a band that pioneered the Pacific Reggae sound.

40 years ago, Herbs formed, growing out of the social activism of the late 70’s and 80’s.  They released their first album Whats’ Be Happen in 1981 which, true to their political roots, featured an aerial shot of Bastion Point on the cover.

While their album output dwindled after 1990, the band’s legacy remained, and in 2012, they became the 11th inductees into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

Now, their story has been immortalised in Herbs: Song of Freedom.

Founding band member Toni Fonoti and the film’s director Tearepa Kahi joined Andrew Dickens to discuss how the film came to be.
