Scientists have raised concerns around the future of 23-million-year old fossil treasure trove Foulden Maar.

Off-shore company Plaman Resourses plans to mine the site in Otago’s Middlemarch for diatomite as stock feed.

A petition has been launched to save the site, and even former Prime Minister Helen Clark has weighed in.

Dr Nic Rawlence is the director of the Otago University’s Palaeogentics Laboratory. He joined The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin to talk about the planned mining site and what it will do to the environment.
