Martin Devlin: This year could be the Warriors worst season yet

Do not read this if you have a sunny disposition.

Do not read this if you are a happy sort of person.

Do not read this if you think the Warriors will have a winning season.

And notice I didn't say the word "successful" there, because for 2020 I have zero idea what that means.

Now let's make this clear, I want the club to win. But then again I also want my Redskins to win, I want United to win.

But the same problem exists across all 3 clubs - we don't have the players.

The greatest thing about rugby league is its simplicity. The game never really changes much.

To be a winning NRL side you need a Gorden Tallis style forward pack with a JT halfback. You need a barnstorming 8 through 13 and a world class #7.

So let's be completely honest here.

The Warriors were never winning this year's comp. Just like they weren't winning last years. Just like they're not winning next years.

Losing Bunty Afoa for the season is a big blow. Not a hammer blow though. Because even with him on deck was anyone saying "gee that's a big meaty forward pack they have" or "fear that Warriors forward pack we do"? No. No they weren't. And no they haven't for years.

Now I admit that when it comes to this club I permanently reside in Pessimistic Place. And that's because the over-hyped hard-sell increased expectations PR guff we're constantly sold every pre-season has left me numb and cold.

I fear this will be the worst campaign yet. And I want to be wrong. Just like I was with both the Silver Ferns and the Black Caps at last year's World Cups. Let's gone (already) Warriors.

But hey, there's always next year right?
