Martin Devlin: Good riddance to the idiotic Super League

Ding dong the witch is dead. For now anyway. Goodbye Super League and good riddance to your arrogant and idiotic plans for world football domination. A victory for the little people it was. The fans have spoken with a venom and collective will that sent these bloated billionaires scurrying back to their PR companies to issue a raft of hurriedly written insincere apologies.

Of course I'm suspicious. We all HAVE to be. Because these rich-listers hate football. They know nothing about the game and they care even less about what us fans think and want. That's why I believe Super League could still do a Dracula and rise from the dead at some stage.

What kind of deal was done between the six English clubs and UEFA? Or  have they all been welcomed back like prodigal sons forgiven with no future punishment pending? The day that us football fans have to rely on the  sincerity and goodwill of UEFA and FIFA to preserve the integrity of the beautiful game we are in big trouble. Those two organisations are as trustworthy as leaving a rabbit in charge of a lettuce. There will definitely be another attempt at creating some sort of contrived bogus load of bollocks league simply because that is where the money is. Covid has taught these owners that the real cash is to be made off broadcast deals and live streaming.

And this new global screentime fanbase doesn't want to watch Southampton vs Burnley, they want to see Man Utd play Barcelona every week. So celebrate the victory for people power but also be wary of a new attack coming when we least expect it. What's happened this last week is akin to one of your close relatives suddenly leaving home last Sunday to run off to join some crazed religious cult.

Two days later they're back in the lounge saying "It's ok now, I'm over it, I've cured".

But are they really? Let's be thankful about the immediate outcome but also remain healthily sceptical about what the future may bring. They say it's over but I'm not so sure.
