Why do we do knee replacements?

  • For advanced arthritis of knee – basically when it wears out.
  • Pain stiffness, poor mobility, fall risk.
  • It’s a major operation very routine, and we have very good orthopaedic surgeons – just not enough of them!

What is the benefit of the operation?

  • It’s very good – reduces pain, increases mobility, reduces fall risk.
  • Most important thing to follow the rehabilitation program given by the surgeon and physio.

Immediately after the operation

  • The main risk for a few days postop is infection and blood clots in the lower leg – we want to prevent those.
  • You will have bruising, swelling in the lower leg, and pain. Pain killers are often used.
  • Early mobilization is important to prevent blood clots. Regular hourly exercise.
  • Wear compression stockings often to prevent clots.
  • Discharged after 2-3 days, when they’re sure you can manage at home with a walking aid.

What to look for when you get home?

  • You will have a swollen leg! Walking helps reduce the swelling plus putting the leg up. There will be lots of bruising.
  • Pain killers, sometimes constipation issues because you’re not moving around as much.
  • Most important thing is to follow the physio’s exercise program.
  • Don’t take on too much. Things like vacuuming and cleaning floors might require help initially.
  • Dressing – sit on side of bed or chair. Use shower stool initially.
  • Be realistic: it can take on average up to six months to fully recover. Back to driving after 6 weeks, and back to light work after 6-8 weeks
  • Most end up less pain, more mobile, and very happy with result!
