Exploring alternative mental health treatments

Host Kyle MacDonald and psychiatrist Dr Ingo Lambrecht examined emerging and alternative mental health treatments, ranging from psychedelic-assisted therapy to cold-water immersion, animal companionship and mindfulness practices.

While conventional pathways, such as visiting a GP, medication and talk therapy, remain the first line of support, the discussion emphasised that mental health treatment is not “one-size-fits-all”. Increasingly, both clinicians and patients are recognising the value of complementary approaches.

A key focus was the re-emergence of psychedelic therapy, particularly the supervised use of psilocybin. Now being cautiously trialled in New Zealand under strict medical oversight, the treatment has shown promise for people experiencing treatment-resistant depression and end-of-life distress. Dr Lambrecht noted that such therapies can produce profound psychological shifts, helping patients reframe trauma or anxiety in ways that traditional methods may not achieve.

However, he stressed that these treatments are highly structured, involving preparation and integration sessions with trained professionals, rather than casual or recreational use.

Beyond clinical interventions, the show highlighted a wide range of everyday practices that listeners reported as effective. Callers described benefits from activities such as spending time in nature, exercising, and engaging with animals, particularly dogs and horses, which can foster emotional connection and reduce anxiety.

Mind-body practices including meditation, tai chi and qigong were also discussed as powerful tools for calming the nervous system. These approaches, while sometimes labelled “alternative”, are increasingly supported by research showing their impact on stress regulation and emotional wellbeing.

Other contributors pointed to the benefits of cold exposure, such as cold showers or ocean swims, which may trigger physiological responses linked to improved mood and energy levels. Though the exact mechanisms remain unclear, proponents argue the results can be significant.

Despite enthusiasm for unconventional treatments, experts urged caution. Natural or alternative remedies are not risk-free and should be approached with informed guidance, particularly when combined with existing medications.

The show ultimately reinforced a central message: effective mental health care is highly individual. Whether through medication, therapy, lifestyle changes or emerging treatments, the goal remains the same, finding what works for each person.
