Winston Peters will be so relieved Jacinda Ardern does trust him after all.

There is increasing evidence Ardern will say literally anything to suit any occasion. Asked on Monday post the SFO news whether she trusted Peters she didn't answer, but yesterday she said she did trust him and she thought the non answer she gave Monday was implicit.

Overnight I think she's worked out what Simon Bridges did a week or so back. She's stuck with him. Where he goes, she goes. And at this moment in time with the polls the way they are, she cannot take the risk of ditching him given the combination of her and the Greens may or may not get her a second term.

Of course, the way things are at the moment, poll wise, Peters won't be around to help her either way. But by not distancing herself so early in election year she, at least, has potential options.

New Zealand First may or may not crack 5 percent, it looks increasingly unlikely. But Shane Jones would back himself in the seat of Northland. And given Ardern, is in the year of saying whatever suits, don't rule out her gifting them a crack by doing a deal, even though they have said they won't.

They weren't building a lot of the roads, until they worked out they have been hopelessly wrong on roads, hence the six billion dollars got tossed at roads the other day and she stood there with a straight face saying Labour was the party of infrastructure.

All of this, of course, endorses what Simon Bridges did last week, cut New Zealand First loose. They can't trust them, and almost as though it had been orchestrated just days later, the Electoral Commission, the police, and the SFO came calling and gave Peters and his mates a nightmare start to election year.

National also have this week's poll. The most popular party, and a coalition  partner on the rise in ACT, versus a government with two parties losing support, and one in a pile of trouble.

Peter's baggage is not Bridge's baggage, its Ardern's. And, for now anyway, she has no other choice than to suck it up, not stand him down, and say she trusts him.

Is that a good convincing look? Hmmm, that's why we have elections.
