Mike's Minute: Why is this government being so nice to criminals?

What is it with this government, and people who flout the law? Nauru is bed enough, people who paid to jump the cue, people who lined the pockets of crooks to transport them, hopefully, to places like Australia.

But at least the government, in their defence, offers up their view of the matter, they argue their case.

In the case of Karel Sroubek, there is no such explanation. I say Sroubek because it could be Jan Antolik, he's got a couple of identities. He entered the country on one, I don’t think the right one.

He's also got gang affiliations and drug smuggling convictions. He's in jail currently, and most importantly of all, he's got residency.

And making it worse than Nauru by quite some margin is the immigration. Ministers refusal to tell us just why they're so keen to allow this bit of work to stay here and become one of us.

Iain Lees-Galloway did, under pressure, yesterday release a letter that he sent the criminal in question which involved a stern warning. He had one last chance. And he needs to behave himself or he might, you ready for it, he might be deported.

You mean like he should have been in the first place?

Now, I want to give Lees-Galloway the benefit of the doubt, because no one in their right mind just hands out residency to criminals for fun. There will be a reason.

The real question, and this is why this is so important, is what is the reason? And does it stack up?

And given residency, refugee status, and citizenship have, in this day and age, become such hot political topics all over the world, it has never been more important to let these sort of decisions see the light of day.

There are people booted out of this country on what the compassionate among us would argue are very callous, and shallow excuses. And yet we can have a thug behind bars allowed to set up a life here for reasons that, on the surface, we can't even begin to be able to fathom.

And all backed up with the old, "you will have to trust me" line.

Well we don’t, and nor should we. For a group of people who promised to be the most open, transparent, and honest government this country has ever seen, how on Earth does that promise stack up against these actions?

And this is an ongoing issue, he's a threat to law and order given his record. Is he good for ongoing, steady employment? And if not, who's paying? That would be us. So we, as they say, have skin in the game.

Residency in a country like ours has real tangible value, and it is not to be handed out lightly, especially to the dubious, and especially with no explanation.

If we let this slide, Lees-Galloway has stared us down, and more fool us.
