Mike's Minute: Fossil fuels keep the world running

So let's dip our toe once more into the wonderful world of theory versus reality. Energy demand from around the world is up again, up two point three percent last year.

That’s good news, you need energy to make things and do things. So the more energy the world is demanding will be based on the desire of people to make, create, and sell new stuff.

Yes, for the climate worriers this means we continue to wreck the planet at a record pace. Simon Upton, our Environment Commissioner, on Tuesday gave his report to the government arguing we need to do more.

We need to split the emissions market, stop planting trees thinking we're fixing all the troubles, because we are not. That particular recommendation is a comment for another day.

But back to us burning up the fossil fuels. It proves, as I have said a thousand times on my show, that right or wrong, fossil fuels are the driver for the world's economy.

Put all the windmills you want up, make as many compost heaps as you like, stick solar panels on rooves until you have blisters, you are not replacing the sheer accessibility, reliability, and efficiency of fossil fuels anytime soon.

Tell Taranaki they're not having any more oil if you like. But when they ask what replaces the $28 billion in lost business, what's your answer? There isn't one, and the world through these new numbers is providing all the proof you need.

Yes, we are investing in renewables, yes renewables are growing, and yes there are quite a few renewable options. But not one of them, not by itself or collectively, can match a bit of coal, oil, or gas.

And as much time as the greenies want to espouse the bright new tomorrow of wind, sun, and Lord knows what else, when the factories of the world go to turn their lights on, it’s the good old fashioned fossil fuels that are providing the means to do so.

So the trick here is to stop banging our heads. The future isn't here, the alternatives don’t work, so stop trying to pedal a snake oil type concept that one day it may be the answer. Because right now it isn't.

Because right now is what counts and selling a worrying troubled tomorrow with generations of sad sacks let down by their grandparents who have inherited a polluted and dirty world isn't a sale pitch we are taking on board.

Another survey done here, yes climate change is real, say most of us. But whose problem is it? Businesses.

In others, we are happy to worry but just can't be bothered addressing it. And, oh by the way, don’t you dare tell me I can't have my heat pump on this winter.

That’s your reality, that's the real world. Global electricity demand went through the roof last year and fossil fuels provided 70 percent of that demand. That is the cold hard truth.

Right here, right now you want heat, light and jobs. The answer is in the ground, not on a whiteboard at Greenpeace's head office.
