The Deputy Prime Minister says there is no point imposing fair pay agreements, when the result is businesses going out of business.

The Council of Trade Unions has been pressuring the government to live up to its election promise of introducing fair pay agreements.

Winston Peters told Mike Hosking putting them in place from Invercargill to Kaitaia as though every marketplace is the same as Auckland or Christchurch wouldn't be fair.

"If there's not an employer that can pay for its workforce, there won't be employment.

“I told representatives yesterday, it's the government's job to be a referee, not to take sides."
