Getting a Home Start grant for a new build home is proving a challenge for first home buyers.

The Government scheme provides people with a grant of up to five thousand dollars if they earn under a certain amount, and purchase a property under a regional price cap.

Real Estate Institute figures released to Newstalk ZB show almost no new build homes are selling within the price caps.

In Tauranga, just 0.3% of new builds are selling under its regional cap.

Institute acting chief executive Wendy Alexander told Mike Hosking there’s also a lack of existing homes under the price cap.

“It’s only the months ahead that’s going to indicate whether this makes any difference at all. Over the country people just do have the opportunity to purchase because there is nothing there.”
