A proposed environmentalist party says it will have broader appeal than the Greens.

The Sustainable New Zealand Party is hoping to have 500 members by the end of the day to enable it to officially become a political party.

Founder and leader Vernon Tava told Mike Hosking the party will be focused on the environment but won't be on the left.

He says the party will be able to work with either Labour or National, and with business.

“Sustainable New Zealand won't be selective with the science and will be made up of practical environmentalists.”

Tava says he has a lot of respect for Green Party co-leader James Shaw, particularly for the work he's doing on the Zero Carbon legislation.

“The problem is that James isn’t able to take the Green Party in the direction he would like to take it.

"When you see where the majority of that party is, you look towards Marama Davidson.”
