A business lobby group says we should be grateful Tiwai Aluminium smelter is still here, rather than blaming it for higher power prices.
The Electricity Authority says each household pays about 200 dollars a year more, because of a Meridian and Contact deal giving Tiwai cheap electricity
Business New Zealand spokesperson, Tina Schirr, told Mike Hosking higher costs have been mainly because of low water, and a lack of gas and wind supply.
She says a lot of people were keen for Tiwai to stay on to secure jobs and protect the environment.
“I mean we produce here in New Zealand aluminium quite clean, and it will eventually just go to probably a place where maybe this is not the case.”
