Medicinal cannabis is being touted as something that could become as valuable to the Marlborough region as Sauvignon Blanc.

From December it will be legal to grow and sell medical cannabis.

Marlborough-based medical cannabis company Puro says the medicinal cannabis market will be worth more than $300 million a year.

Managing director Tim Aldridge is anticipating the industry will take off.

"We anticipated that this market will be significant in Marlborough and on par with the wonderful wine industry."

He told Mike Hosking that New Zealand has a chance to carve a niche in the global market.

Aldridge says that there are a number of players in the industry already.

"It's very serious people and very serious money."

He says that by crowdfunding they hope it will allow 'mum and dad' investors to come with them on this journey.
