New Zealand On Air is looking to find ways to instil a sense of belonging and identity in children.

The Children's Use of Media Study 2020 has found Kiwi kids are mainly watching foreign media platforms - like Netflix and Youtube.

Sixty five per cent of pre-schoolers don't have a favourite New Zealand TV show.

Head of funding Amie  Mills says as international platforms become more popular, it's increasingly harder to share New Zealand content.

But she says it's critical kids recognise themselves on screen.

Mills says the funding agency needs to look at getting local content onto international platforms.

Children's entertainer Suzy Cato joined Mike Hosking to share her thoughts on making Kiwi made television more appealing for children to watch.
