The Vatican has said it “welcomes” the release of George Pell from prison after his conviction for child sex offences was overturned yesterday.

The headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church said in a statement it had faith in the Australian judicial system following the Cardinal’s release.

But as Pell spends his first night free after more than a year in prison, vandals have targeted the monastery where he is staying, tying children’s toys to the building’s gates.

Yesterday, Australia’s High Court moved to unanimously quash the conviction of the Cardinal for child sex abuse.

“The Holy See, which has always expressed confidence in the Australian judicial authority, welcomes the High Court’s unanimous decision … (and) reaffirms its commitment to preventing and pursuing all cases of abuse against minors,” the Vatican said in a statement
