A Southland Fish and Game Council member has until 4pm tomorrow to stand down, after sexist comments caused serious social media backlash.

Ken Cochrane described a whitebait working group as being influenced by "chick scientists".

Freshwater fish expert Stella McQueen told Mike Hosking Cochrane made a fool of himself and is paying for it.

"He tried to dismiss all the knowledge and experience in the room, in one go."

McQueen says Cochrane went into the meeting with that opinion and came out again with the same opinion - despite having talked to the women and engaged in the process.
