More female athletes are undergoing sports surgery, and they're needing it younger.
ACC Research shows a 120-percent increase in ACL reconstruction surgery for 15 to 19-year-old women.
This is disproportionate to increases of the same surgery for men, just 36-percent in the 20-24 year old bracket.
Waikato University exercise psychologist Stacy Sims told Mike Hosking a male based approach to training isn't working for females.
"Research has been done back in the 30s and 60s for men, but if we look at how that works for women's physiology, it doesn't quite match up."
She says that research shows female athletes need to stop training like men.
"The research is starting to catch up and saying that women have different biomechanics, and this can be contributing to some of the injuries that are coming out."
