The government has given the green light to Christchurch's plans for its residential red zone.

The 602 hectares of land in Christchurch's east had 5000 homes on it before the earthquake.

Regenerate Christchurch completed the draft plan for the Otakaro Avon River Corridor in March.

It features an 11-kilometre “Green Spine” from the city to New Brighton, as well as walkways, biking tracks and wetlands.

However, the plan doesn't include a water sports lake which angered lobby group East Lake Trust.

The plan has now been signed off by Regeneration Minister Megan Woods, who said it would be phased in over many years.
