Schools from around New Zealand are joining together to launch a campaign against proposed changes to the school system.

The Tomorrow's Schools plan proposes replacing community leadership with 'hubs' that will look after up to 125 schools.

In response, 42 of the country's nearly 2500 schools have formed the Community Schools Alliance.

Auckland Grammar Principal, Tim O'Connor, is one of the members and told Mike Hosking a new model won't work for every school.

"What these schools are all saying and they come from very different positions, and very different financial positions, from very different governance positions, are saying is that they would like to retain autonomy for the governance of their schools so their communities have input into them."

He said the schools are very varied but they are all asking for more flexibility.

"Where it is occurring well for schools and the Ministry's own statistics show for 15 out of 16 schools it is working well. "

O'Connor said a "one size fits all approach" won't work for a number of schools.

"A large number if New Zealand schools are primary and a large number of those schools have under 100 [students] so we can understand that you could then group schools together into small hubs..but the point is, it shouldn't be a one size fits all approach across the country. There should be choice for schools."
