The world's newest weight loss treatment has been created right here in New Zealand, from New Zealand ingredients.

Calocurb goes on sale here today and is being launched in the US market next month.

The supplement, made from Nelson hop flowers, has been developed over eight years with a $20 million government research grant.

Calocurb chief executive Sarah Kennedy told Mike Hosking it's a New Zealand tool to in America's battle against obesity.

"America is the most overweight in the world and our absolute target market but the big thing is we bring that back to New Zealand."

Its effects are yet to be proven through long-term randomised trials but Kennedy says the short-term trials have been promising.

"It does reduce the appetite by 20 per cent."
