New Zealand sheep and beef farms are close to being carbon neutral.

A study from Auckland University of Technology shows that vegetation on many sheep and beef farms offsets carbon emissions from 63 to 118 per cent.

Beef and Lamb New Zealand chief executive Sam McIvor told Mike Hosking research from a few years ago showed there was more than four million hectares of vegetation on sheep sand beef farms.

"The research showed that the vast majority of remaining emissions were being offset and the sector was on the way to carbon neutrality by 2050."

Consumers should be reassured that New Zealand beef and lamb is some of the most sustainable globally, McIvor said.
