New Zealand sheep farmers are the first in the world to breed low methane sheep.

Beef and Lamb Genetics has launched a breeding value measurement, where farmers can measure the methane levels emitted by certain sheep.

The breeds found to emit less methane will be commercially bred.

King Country stud breeder Russell Proffit told Mike Hosking it's a major step forward for the sheep industry.

"I think like most sheep farmers, we are just trying to help the NZ agriculture industry and do our part against climate change."
