Several residents could be "grassed off" by Auckland Council's latest proposal.

It wants to be able to fine people for parking on roadside berms that don't have "no parking" signs.

AT's Traffic Bylaw prohibits parking on grass berms. But Land Transport Act rules mean "no parking" signs must be installed every 100 metres to enforce the ban.

On Sunday Waitematā Local Board Chair Pippa Coom, on behalf of the council, will seek support from Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) at its Wellington conference to lobby central government for a law change.

Coom told Mike Hosking that this needs to be sorted out.

"We're asking for a rule change to make it very clear that berms are not for parking."

She says that it has become quite a problem in the city centre, as people are trying to avoid paying for parking on the street.

Coom says that the berms are an extension of the footpath, and people should not be parking there. 

"We don't want people parking on them, and I wouldn't think most people would think you can't park there anyway."
