The Transport Minister Phil Twyford is justifying the claim the fuel tax works in Auckland, but wouldn't in any other region, saying Auckland is a 'transport basket case that needs bold measures" to be taken.
He said a regional fuel tax was never seriously considered for other regions but made assurances that doesn't mean it was was a bad idea.
"We took the view and we campaigned on it, that Auckland was such a transport basket case that it need bold measures
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed no other regions will get a fuel tax while she's Prime Minister.
Several other regional and city councils have requested a fuel tax, to raise funding for new transport infrastructure.
But Twyford told Mike Hosking it was never on the cards, in this term of government.
"We've always ruled them out basically, and said in this term of government we are not going to consider it and the Prime Minister's view has always been that Auckland will be the only one."
The Minister said he and the Prime Minister confirmed their position, during a meeting before question time yesterday.
