Auckland's Mayor wants the city to have an Orange Christmas.
Cabinet is meeting today to make a decision on the current traffic light settings.
Auckland is at Red alongside Northland and other low vaccinated areas in the Central and East Coast of the North Island, while the rest of the country sits at Orange.
Phil Goff says the downward trend in new cases and high vaccination rate are good reasons to put Red behind us.
He told Mike Yardley one group will be particularly keen to see it go.
“The main thing is really for the hospitality industry, it has taken a real hammering, and obviously it would welcome that.”
Goff says waiting until January will be too long for the hospitality industry, and ditching Red makes sense.
“The new Delta cases have certainly plateaued and are starting to trend down and we hope that continues.”
