The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been given their freedom - at a huge personal cost.

Harry and Megan will no longer be referred to as HRH, lose their public funding, and be forced to pay back the money given to them by taxpayers to fund renovations on their cottage.

Royal Commentator Phil Dampier told Mike Hosking it'll be a hard move for Harry in particular.

"I think Meghan will be happy, I don't think she will be worried about losing the titles as long as she can get to work, maybe do some acting.

"But Harry's giving up a lot. Something that I think will hurt Harry quite a bit is he is severing all his ties with the military, so for example he won't be the Captain General of the Royal Marines anymore."

He says that while they won't be taking taxpayer money anymore, the Sovereign Grant only made up five percent of his income.

"95 per cent of it came from the Duchy of Cornwall which is his father's estate which Prince William will one day inherit. Some people argue its public money, some people say its private money, it's a matter of opinion really."

Dampier says it will be difficult for them to stand on their own feet without being seen as cheapening the name of the royal family.
