Social media platforms will need to report how many terrorist posts they've taken down under new rules Australia is developing.

The new protocols have been discussed at the G7 summit in France.

It would mean the likes of Facebook and Twitter would regularly have to report how many attempts there were to upload violent extremist content and how many were downloaded.

Business and technology commentator Paul Spain told Mike Hosking the social media giants will likely jump on board quickly.

"Hopefully they've got at least some moral obligation that they accept to not be spreading bad stuff on the internet."
