Moves are being made to make sure consumers aren't being ripped off at the pump.

AA's predicting a fall in premium petrol prices, as more companies make plans to display premium fuel prices on their price boards.

It's something the Commerce Commission suggested in December in an effort to increase competition in the industry.

Although it's not regulated yet, Z Energy's chief executive Mike Bennetts says they ordered the panels and lights required as soon as the report came out.

"As soon as we get panels made available through the production process, we'll be swapping them out, and we're very confident we'll have all of ours done by June."

He says their higher octane prices are among the lowest.

"We would expect to either get more business as ta result of that, or potentially have others match up or choose to price in a way that is competitive with our pricing."

Bennetts says the move is costing them millions of dollars.
