An epidemiologist says New Zealand needs to significantly ramp up its testing rates for Covid 19.
Around 1600 tests are being carried out every day.
But Otago University epidemiologist Michael Baker told Mike Hosking that's not enough.
"The number of tests needs to double or triple to provide reasonable coverage."
Michael Baker says the lockdown is a very effective measure for containing the virus.
"New Zealand has gone hard early, so we are unlikely to follow in the footsteps of other countries."
He says while other countries waited too late and are chasing the virus - New Zealand has done amazing things to get ahead of the curve.
