The Race Relations Commissioner is concerned about a growing number of racist incidents sparked by the coronavirus outbreak.

Canterbury Police are investigating a message sent to Rolleston parents, calling Asian students virus spreaders and telling them to stay home

The message, which has caused upset and disgust in the community, was from Protect Rolleston and used proton mail.

Meng Foon told Mike Hosking is completely unacceptable, even in circumstances like this.

"It sort of brings the worst out of people, and unfortunately in some of us, racism is at the tip of our tongue."

He says people should be aware that the virus is happening, but that there are no cases in New Zealand and there is no need for abuse.

Police say they're trying to identify the source of the email.

They say unlawful, abusive or threatening behaviour targeting people in relation to coronavirus will not be tolerated - and racism and xenophobia is taken seriously.

Parents are also concerned at how the sender had their email addresses.
