Southland's Charity Hospital has made an early start before it's even opened by providing colonoscopies in Invercargill.
Founder Melissa Vining has led the fundraising with husband Blair, who died in 2019 after battling cancer.
Vining told Mike Hosking volunteer clinicians have started work with patients because of a shortfall of cancer care.
"We will keep speaking up to create political change so the health system is funded appropriately."Â
In the meantime, Vining says doing something is better than doing nothing.
Fundraising for the hospital is ongoing, as operational costs will need to be covered once the hospital officially opens.Â
The hospital is expected to open by the end of the year.
