Luxembourg's become the first country to make public transport free, but not everyone's convinced it would work here.
As of March 1, the European state of just over 600,000 people has removed all costs from their transit system. The move will affect around 40 percent of households and save each one just over NZ$200 a year.
It's part of a wider plan to reduce congestion, and affects all trains, buses and trams in the landlocked country.Â
However, Greater Auckland's Matt Lowrie told Mike Hosking affordability isn't the issue in New Zealand.
"There's a whole lot of things we could do first that would make a bigger difference. That's putting on more buses, more trains, more ferries.
"The problem they've got now is they can't get on the buses and trains because they are so full."
